BIBLIOGRAPHIC SOURCES

To compile these exercises, inspiration has been drawn from some of the leading educational works for the harp, methods and exercises written by Naderman, Bochsa, Zabel, Renie, Godefroid, etc... These books are highly recommended for reading and in-depth study by every student and enthusiast. All titles are in the public domain and are readily available online through the IMSLP.ORG website (a reference site for every musician).
You can also find the pdf files at these links:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/methods

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

To make the most of the opportunities provided by these exercises and to organize a structured learning path, we recommend using the "Work Sheets." You can print or photocopy as many sheets as you need and keep them in a binder. Alternatively, you can purchase a pre-printed workbook. In these "Work Sheets," you can easily keep track of your study plan, your progress, and make helpful notes on the execution of the exercises.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This book will help you develop strength, agility, suppleness, and stamina. Starting with the Basic level is recommended even for more experienced players as a technical refresher. We also suggest tackling the topics found in Volume 4, Miscellanea, right from the beginning to complement the technical aspects covered in the other three volumes.

The choice to write the exercises in the key of E-flat major was made because it's the natural key for lever harps (we recommend tuning your instrument to E-flat from the start, as most of the repertoire is written with this tuning). Additionally, E-flat is a very common key for pedal harps as well.

While a 36-string instrument is recommended, many of the exercises can be performed on smaller harps.

Plan your practice sessions to optimize the time you dedicate to them. Start by tuning your harp; this will train your musical ear for proper pitch.

Choose the exercises you want to focus on for a certain period of time. They can all be from a single topic you want to develop or just one exercise from various topics. It's up to you to decide which aspects of technique you need to concentrate on.

During your practice sessions, remember to begin with proper warm-up, and especially when studying more complex exercises, take breaks to relax your body, shaking out your arms, hands, fingers, and legs. Stand up occasionally.

Play with a steady tempo and increase the speed very gradually. While a metronome is a valuable tool, it's true that hardly any musician enjoys its ticking. Alternatively, since the exercises in this book are all based on the same harmonic sequence, you can replace the metronome with an app that plays musical accompaniments automatically. There are many options available, and once you've set the necessary chords (Eb, Bb, C-, G-, Ab, Eb, Ab, Bb) and your desired BPM, it will provide a pleasant musical backdrop for your exercises instead of the metronome. Among the many online alternatives, we recommend ChordBot Lite, a free and user-friendly app.

Lastly, it's important to maintain good hand and body posture. This has a positive impact on many factors: sound quality, execution agility, your body's health, and even the aesthetic aspect of your posture. The harp is an instrument that requires appropriate body movements; don't be afraid to move and let the sound flow from the body of the instrument.

We hope you will enjoy making this book a part of your daily harp routine.

Paris, 1899. As the turn of the new century approached, the vibrant city of light was abuzz with artistic fervor, its streets echoing with the footsteps of visionaries and dreamers. Against this backdrop of burgeoning creativity, a group of composers emerged, each destined to leave an indelible mark on the history of French music.

Among these luminaries was Claude Debussy, whose compositions, through a new use of harmony and timbre, seemed to conjure the very essence of Impressionist paintings.

Maurice Ravel, a master of orchestration, composed music that was a mirror reflecting the elegance and opulence of the Art Nouveau movement, a marriage of intricate design and sumptuous melodies.

Gabriel Fauré, a bridge between Romanticism and Modernism, wrote delicate melodies that spoke to the heart. His compositions, imbued with a poignant simplicity, carried a sense of longing and introspection, much like the delicate lines of a Lalique glasswork.

These lever harp arrangements, designed for a limited string configuration of 26 strings (from C to g''), offer an accessible yet musically satisfying experience.

The intentionally simplified level of difficulty ensures that harpists of varying skill levels can engage with these compositions, embarking on a voyage through the harmonies and aesthetics that defined a pivotal era in French musical history. The resonant timbre of the harp becomes an ideal medium for channeling the spirit of Impressionism and Art Nouveau, allowing performers to capture the essence of these compositions and share them with audiences seeking an authentic connection to the past.

A Merry French Christmas - French carols for small harp

Beyond the usual Christmas carols

there is a vast territory of little-known traditional songs,

but no less fascinating than the more famous ones.

This book will take you to the discovery of new French Christmas melodies, collected and arranged in rondo and sonatina form.

The pieces, suitable for late beginners, can be performed on a small harp (19/22 strings, lower note G) and a few very simple lever changes are required (B flat, F sharp, C sharp). Fingerings are included in the score.

The French folk repertoire is particularly rich and varied: from the north to the south of the country, each region has its own styles and characteristics.

The Christmas atmosphere develops in a choice of songs from the archaic style to the more joyful ones.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: ANDANTINO from Concerto K299 - arranged for flute and lever (or pedal) harp

The Concerto for flute, harp and orchestra K.299 is certainly a work which, thanks to its beauty, has conquered a permanent place in recitals and concert programs. Furthermore, being the only piece written for the harp by Mozart, it is a cornerstone of the literature and repertoire of every harpist.

The present arrangement of the second movement, a lovely Andantino, offers performers the opportunity to play the piece as a duo, without any orchestral or piano accompaniment. The harp part is adapted to the lever harp with almost no modification of the original. The flute part can also be played with splendid effect on a violin.

Playful Variations on "Happy Birthday" for Harp

Printed edition with spiral binding: https://www.lulu.com/shop/alessandro-palazzani/playful-variations-on-happy-birthday-for-lever-or-pedal-harp-spiral-bound-edition/paperback/product-4pnk5z.html?page=1&pageSize=4

AMAZON PAPERBACK EDITION at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09KNGJ2YV

This set of fun variations will take you through different musical styles and quotes from the repertoire, for a fun-tastic celebration of any friend's birthday. Of medium-advanced difficulty, they are playable on lever or pedal harp.
The book also includes a simplified and technically less demanding version.

After a driving introduction, the musical theme "Happy birthday to you" is presented in a simple and concise way. Var. 1 (Classique) is in the style of Mozart, with delicate Rococo embellishments and a simple modulation to the dominant. Var. 2 (Fantasque) is inspired by Hasselmans' Follets and explores the special effects of the harp technique. Without pause we move on to Var. 3, a passionate Tango with a central section modulating to the minor key. Var. 4 is a waltz with references to the cadenza from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, Strauss's Blauen Donau and Hasselmans' Petite Valse. The dance movement turns into Var.5 (Recitative) which offers a moment of calm and reflection, on elaborate impressionist harmonies. After a transition similar to the intro, Var. 6, a lively ragtime, concludes the set in a joyful party atmosphere.

Ten Romantic Adagios for the wedding ceremony and other occasions

Ten Romantic Adagios for the wedding ceremony and other occasions
arranged for small lever harp and a melodic instrument, with an optional bass line

This volume contains ten adagios suitable for the wedding ceremony and other secular or religious occasions. The songs are chosen not only among the most famous and loved but also among the least known, for their great artistic and emotional value.

The arrangement work was inspired by the practicality and flexibility that the situation often requires and each piece can be played by different instrumental ensembles.
The main melodic part can be played by any treble instrument and text has been included for vocal pieces.
The accompaniment part was conceived for small lever harp (the low G is the lowest note) and is of intermediate difficulty but very effective. It can also be played by other types of harp or keyboard instruments.
An optional bass part is provided. It is not essential but gives a richer tone to the ensemble.

The score and the parts are sold separately. The parts are available in three different keys: C, B flat, E flat.

NADERMAN: sonatas, etudes, rondos - arranged for lever harp

or on AMAZON (paperback edition) at

François Joseph Naderman (1781-1835) was a classic harpist, composer and teacher of the period after the French revolution. Very famous in his time, he became the first harp professor at conservatoire de Paris, starting the glorious French school of harp.

His works are regarded as some of the most important pieces in the harp repertoire today. Especially the seven progressive sonatas op. 92 are frequently studied, played and recorded.

For their usefulness and didactic effectiveness, and for their high artistic quality, I selected some works by Naderman and I arranged them for the lever harp.

As my intent is eminently practical and not at all historical or philological, I took some liberty in rearranging the pieces, changing some harmonic progression and adding some passages and cadences to simplify the lever changes. The fingerings for these varied passages are written in the score.

Obviously I recommend that you compare my arrangements with the original score, on which you will find all Naderman's fingerings and, of course, the music in its original form.

The complete collection includes five volumes:
